Opening Day Game NL: SF @ Cin.

 April 5, 1973

  It was Opening Day for the 1973 MLB season. The traditional opening game in Cincinnati featured the Reds hosting the San Francisco Giants. Don Gullett got the start for Cincinnati and Juan Marichal started for SF. 
  It was 3-2 Cincinnati entering the 7th inning when SF busted the game open by scoring 7 runs. The big blow was a grand slam home run by Willie McCovey.  Marichal drove in 2 runs to help his own cause and got the 1st Win of the season. Gullett was pitching well but was the victim of an error that led to 5 unearned runs.

Willie McCovey hit a grand slam while Tito Fuentes had 2 base hits and
2 RBI as SF beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9 to 5.
 
Juan Marichal(1-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 8 and 2/3 innings and
surrended up 11 hits and 2 walks.  San Francisco had 9 hits for the
afternoon.  
 
Elias Sosa earned his 1st save.  Don Gullett(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He
was knocked around pretty good, giving up 8 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
