Woodie Fryman mowed down 12 California batters at Anaheim Stadium where the
Detroit Tigers beat the California Angels by the score of 3 to
2.
Fryman(3-5) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He surrendered only 7
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. California out-hit Detroit 7 to 4, but Detroit
ended up with more runs.
Nolan Ryan(9-4) took the loss. He surrendered only 3 runs and 4 hits in 9
innings. Fryman was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a
little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and
a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
