There were some very fine pitching performances in today's slate of games in the AL. All the winning starting pitchers allowed 1 run or less while leading their team to victory.
Boston's Luis Tiant, Milwaukee's Jerry Bell, California's Nolan Ryan, Chicago's Wilbur Wood, Oakland's Ken Holtzmann and Vida Blue (doubleheader), and Detroit's Mickey Lolich were all outstanding. Some of the day's losing pitchers weren't too bad themselves. They just came up on the short end of the stick. It's worth noting that Wilbur Wood's Win was his MLB leading 7th (7-0) of the season.

Luis Tiant tossed a fine 3 hitter as the Boston Red Sox topped the Minnesota
Twins by a score of 3 to 1 at Metropolitan Stadium.
Boston tallied 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. The big moment was
provided by Orlando Cepeda who helped quiet the crowd when he cleared the
fences for a two-run home run. Boston managed 9 hits in their victory.
Tiant(5-2) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Bill Hands(2-2) took
the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 8 hits in 8 innings.

Dave May connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI and Jerry Bell tossed a
complete game as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals by the
score of 7 to 1 at County Stadium.
Milwaukee had 4 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 4
hits. The highlight belonged to Darrell Porter who brought the crowd to
their feet when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'. Milwaukee had a total of 9
hits for the game.
The win was credited to Bell(2-3) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. Dick
Drago(1-3) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and no walks in 6
innings.

Nolan Ryan mowed down 12 Baltimore batters at Memorial Stadium as the
California Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 2 to
1.
Ryan(6-1) was very good in the win. He allowed only 6 hits and 5 walks in 9
innings. Baltimore had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.
The loss was charged to Jim Palmer(4-2). He pitched 9 innings allowing 10
hits and 2 walks. Ryan was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had
good command of all my pitches. Just as important, my location was right
on.'

Wilbur Wood(7-0) and Steve Kline(2-3) treated the Chicago fans to a fine
pitching duel at Comiskey Park. The Chicago White Sox eventually emerged as
victors over the New York Yankees by the score of 2 to 1.
Chicago scored 2 runs in the decisive bottom of the 7th inning. The game was
a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
Cy Acosta was credited with his 3rd save.

Ken Holtzman carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the Oakland A's
defeated the Cleveland Indians 5 to 0 at Cleveland Stadium.
Holtzman(4-1) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Cleveland
hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings dropping his ERA
from 1.99 to 1.69. The left-handed Holtzman had his no-hit bid broken up by
Frank Duffy who doubled with two outs in the 8th inning. Oakland banged out
11 hits on the afternoon.
Dick Tidrow(1-4) ended up with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 11 hits in 9
innings.

Designated hitter Deron Johnson slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Vida Blue
went the distance as the Oakland A's bested the Cleveland Indians 8 to 1 at
Cleveland Stadium.
Johnson had a big day with his bat. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 3rd inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 5th
inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Oakland rapped out 11
hits for the afternoon.
Blue(2-0) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Brent Strom(2-3)
absorbed the loss. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 8 innings.
No one has been able to stop Oakland lately as they lengthened their winning
streak to 6 games. Dick Williams was in a talkative mood after the ballgame.
'Fellows, I don't know what to tell you. our guys are just playing lights out
lately. Everything and everybody is just really hitting on all cylinders. I
know it can't last forever - but that isn't going to stop us from trying!'

Mickey Lolich had an impressive outing and Duke Sims had 2 base hits and 2 RBI
as the Detroit Tigers outscored the ice-cold Texas Rangers 4 to
1.
Lolich(4-2) was tremendous on the mound for Detroit. He didn't allow much,
just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.66 to 4.15.
Detroit finished with 7 hits in the victory.
The loss was charged to Rich Hand(1-3). Billy Martin was very impressed with
his pitcher, Lolich, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon.
It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'
