1973 NL Standings and League Leaders

 May 16, 1973

Halfway through the month of May finds the New York Mets leading the NL East and the Los Angeles Dodgers leading the West. The Mets lost 6 in a row recently which has allowed the rest of the teams in the division to gain some ground. The Montreal Expos are now only 2 games back and St. Louis is 3 back.
The Dodgers continue their winning ways in the West, going 9-1 in their last 10. At 26-9, LA has the best record in the NL. The Dodgers' Don Sutton (6-1, 1.19 ERA, 52 K) has been the top starter in the league. SF's Bobby Bonds has hit 15 bombs, most in the NL this season and he's chipped in with 34 RBI, 2nd most in the league.

1973 NL Game: Phil. @ Chi

 May 12, 1973

In a superbly pitched game by both starters, Rick Reuschel and the Chicago Cubs defeated Wayne Twitchell and the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0. Both pitchers allowed only 2 hits. Rick Reuschel pitched a 2 hit shutout as the Chicago Cubs beat the reeling
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 1 to 0.

Reuschel(5-2) was simply too much for the Philadelphia batters. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Reuschel
chalked up 12 strikeouts dropping his ERA from 1.32 to 1.11. Philadelphia
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.

Wayne Twitchell(0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing
only 2 hits and 2 walks. Reuschel was obviously very pleased with his
performance in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games
where everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched
another two or three innings. I only hope that I can do it again next time
out!'

Second baseman Glenn Beckert had 5 hits and 6 RBI as the Chicago Cubs
outscored the struggling Philadelphia Phillies 12 to 6.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Beckert. He lined a one-base hit which scored a run in the 1st
inning, doubled in the 4th inning, lined a single scoring a run in the 5th
inning, doubled plating two runs in the 7th inning and ripped a base-hit
knocking in a run in the 8th inning. Offensively, Chicago was a juggernaut.
They scored in 6 separate innings.

The winning pitcher was Ray Burris(1-0) who allowed no runs in 4 and 1/3
innings. Barry Lersch(1-4) ended up with the loss in relief. Chicago scored
big getting 4 runs off him in 2 and 1/3 innings.

'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Beckert said. 'That's
it'

AL Game: Det. @ KC

 May 10, 1973

Norm Cash and the Detroit Tigers really laid it on the Kansas City Royals tonight 14-3. Detroit had been having trouble scoring runs the past week. That all changed in today's ballgame that saw the Tigers pound out 20 hits. Cash led the attack going 3 for 5 with 2 homeruns and 7 RBI. The 7 RBI are the most by any player in one game in the AL this season. Joe Coleman pitched decently for Detroit and improved his record to 6-1.
