1973 AL Game and Detroit News: Det. @ Bal.

 April 22, 1973

My Detroit Tigers have now lost 5 in a row after getting swept in Baltimore. Today, the Tigers lost in 13 innings by the score of 4-3. After a day off, Detroit will travel to Texas for a 3-game series. The Rangers have lost 4 in a row as of late, so someone will finally put a stop their losing streak. I can only hope it's Detroit.

Orioles defeated the Detroit Tigers in 13 innings by the score of 4 to 3 at
Memorial Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Baltimore ended up
winning it in the 13th inning. Mark Belanger lashed a single. After an out
was recorded, Belanger proceeded to steal third base. Bobby Grich then laced
a base-hit making Baltimore the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration. Baltimore finished with 16 hits while Detroit ended up with 9.

Eddie Watt(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 innings. Lerrin
Lagrow(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no walks
in 1/3 of an inning.

Third baseman Bill Melton blasted 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Chicago
White Sox topped the Kansas City Royals by a score of 11 to 4 at Kaufmann
Stadium.

Melton was in a groove all day. The Kansas City fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st
inning, lined a one-base hit which brought home a run in the 3rd inning,
smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning and lifted one out of
the park for a two run home run in the 7th inning. Chicago finished with 14
hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Wilbur Wood(4-0) who went 8 innings allowing 4 runs.
Dick Drago(1-2) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls in 5 and 2/3
innings.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Melton said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'
